    I just picked up a JCA20H 20 watt head for $196 shipped:

    http://www.ampfactory.com/
    Code: NAMM18 (good through Monday)

I had one of these as part of a trade once, and regretted flipping it. It's a JCM800 derivative with EL84s- nice '70s crunch, and cleans up beautifully with your guitar's volume knob. I figure for the price of a boutique stomp box, why not?

My old-school "333" 22H and 1x12 cab is currently sitting in my parents' basement unused for 4+ years or so (too loud for apartment living). I've been contemplating parting with the stack in order to help fund one of the new Orange Rocker/Hinds Terror heads, but looking through the ampfactory website reminds me of why I liked the amp so much in the first place. Might have a tough decision on my hands.

The JCA20 watts are really nice amps, for anyone interested in these. Love my Picovalve as well, especially with new tubes (JJ 6V6 and Retrovalve Blue and Amber preamp tubes)

I figured that I'd give the Custom 5 Full Nelson version a shot. I didn't like the Picovalve and this is supposed to be a different circuit. Plus it has the Mojotone loops. I always wanted a single octet tube amp around so when a power tube goes bad I haver a use for the remaining one.

    I went for this look:

I spent the weekend deciding which tubes to order for this, and wound up with:

-Pair of Reflektor 6n14n Commie EL84-alikes
-JAN GE 12AT7 for the PI

I'm going to try some JAN GE 6829s (similar to a 12AT7) that I got on the cheap (thanks Mickey!) in the preamp positions, we'll see what happens. Stock, these amps are a little trebly and super gainy (which is the whole point, really), I want to warm it up a bit and roll back the gain to " '70s crunch" levels instead of " '80s hot-rodded." Also, the Russian glass is '80s military stuff so it should last longer than modern production. Ironic that the preamp tubes will be '80s US military, while the power tubes will be '80s USSR military.

    Come on, big brown truck...

I'm curious as to the Full Nelson mode. Ive only heard one demo. That's how I felt about the power tubes too. Although getting about 5 watts from a single tube...I'm not too sure how much if it's character is coming out. I'm pretty sure you can put 6V6s in it too. Either way for $163 I'll give it a shot.

I agree. It seemed open enough for me to be interested in it. I'm assuming that you watched the guy playing in almost a darkened room?

My amp came in this week, but work is nuts so I only had about 20 minutes last night to give it a spin through the Eminence Big Ben 15 in my Traynor YBA4.

    Well worth $200.

I hit it with a Strat and a germanium Fuzz Face. With the Strat alone the amount of gain was perfect- I cranked the master and the gain knob was reasonably clean up to about noon, then it got hairier until about 9 o'clock when the Rawk started happening. If I was just going to use the amp with a Strat or Tele I probably wouldn't bother with lower gain tubes, but we'll see how it does with P90s.

Tonally it was a bit bright and grainy- not bad, but noticeable. I've got some JJ 12ax7s and the Russian EL84s to install (and a biasing to do) and I'm optimistic this will help.

And it was loud. The next time I get together with my drummer buddy I'll see if it can keep up with him, but through the right cabinet I think it can.

I used to use a JCA 20H with the stock 2x12 cab at band practice. It gets over the drummer just fine. I used to run it pretty clean then hit it with a Carl Martin DC Drive.
