This is one of those "I really wish I hadn't seen it because now I'm obsessing over the killer price" things. A seller in Gainesville is selling an AXL Akita AT40 all tube 2x12 combo for $160! I never heard of AXL amps before and I'm not seeing a ton of info online. Seems they may have come out sometime around 2007 maybe. Anyone know about these bad boys? Apparently this amp was also sold as Johnson JA-40WT and VHT Lead 40.

    • 40 Watts RMS
    • Preamp: 4 x 12AX7
    • Power Amp: 4 x EL84
    • 2 x 12" Alphatone Speakers
    • Accutronics Spring Reverb
    • Effects loop which can be used as series or parallel

I'll attach pics in case the ad gets taken down.

Update: according to a current eBay listing: "It is a Class “A/B” EL84 all tube amp that is one of the last Steve Fryette designs prior to his sale of VHT to AXL in 2008."

Someone buy this thing so I can forget it exists!

I used to have one of the 20 watt models. Not a bad little amp... I don't remember much about it, so it must not have been great. It had a 10" speaker, which was the weak link.

That looks pretty cool. Go for it. What's the worst that can happen?

All I can tell you is Costco had a version with the wood on the cabinet showing (No tolex). I didn't jump on it and missed out.

On a side note, AXL and Johnson are sister companies. I have only played one Johnson amp. It was a bigger amp. But it was killer!

I remember seeing these liquidated and concur.. shares with Johnson, and to a degree VHT(china). I wasn't under the impression that Vht shared production with Johnson and Axl but that they were all distributed by musiclink (and several other brands).

$160 eh? That's a tough one. These aren't high end amps, but for that kind of coin you don't exactly lose no matter what it is. On the other side ; quality would be my first concern since I've never heard one but am generally skeptical of today's Chinese made amps. Plus with today's gear market; if you wait a little longer you might find something better or more vintage

I have the 20W version. It is a VERY clean amp. Not dirt capable but handles pedals nicely.

Jimmy, didn't Dave have one or two of these for sale on Ubuyguitars? That looks familiar. I think they were dirt cheap, too.

True, it is a nice price. I've been pretty happy with the other MIC amps and guitars I own.

I'm not in the market for another amp (I already have too many!) but I just want to buy when I see a sweet deal. I will try to ignore this one. :)

Ya, Dave did have the wood veneer Akita just like this one.. maybe one or two green AXL amps in similar fashion. I don't remember them being this cheap, especially after shipping. We haven't talked about those guys in a long while. The fire sale dwindled, and their shipping prices went all wonky. But they have a new website and are able to work out deals on shipping if you ask what's possible by email. I ordered some replacement parts for my 36watt VHT build a couple months ago, and although a few items were screwed up (which is typical but I still find it funny), I can't complain for the prices they liquidate at.

I don't know if you caught it, but I uploaded a work pic of the 36watt project in motion on the "work bench" thread

I saw this amp in a pawn in GNV recently but haven't played it. I forget what it was priced at.

I've got the akita 20 with the nice wood cab. I got it from ubuyguitars. I think they were asking hundred something but it was missing power inpUT jack. Then it had a loose connection inside but after fixing that it's been working well. It's my rehersal anp currently. Iirc it's all tube clean but the gain channel is basically a tube screamer circuit. Don't know why the pix won't embed properly

nice! did you ever do any sort of review of that one? Their site was so lacking in product info, it was hard to tell what you were really going to get. Cool looking amp. Do you like how it sounds?

I did kinda leave that out. I was in a hurry. It does ok. I'm mostly running it clean for my Mustang floor. Biggest problem right now is the vol pot is a little touchy at the low end where I'm using it . I really just got it running and put it in service. At 20 it gets plenty loud. It low hum and it's a problem because somtimes I leave it on for a day or 2. So it's been burned in and it's reliable.

I am also using an axl amp as my practice pa. It's been very reliable. Decent tone. Works as well as my yamaha.
It's funny because axl is the parent company but I'm fairly nervous about the brand. When i went to ubuy out of 3 pa's i picked the working 1. So axl can make me feel a bit unsettled. However the sub brand johnson I have usually liked their equipment and own 3 guitars plus some parts.
I'd say the 160 deal would be interesting but not a steal. My pa for $50 was a steal. Maybe go for it if you are in the market
