I like the colors and the pickguard shape. But WTH are "single–coil Epiphone Open Coil Humbuckers,"?

Dude, you've got me. I actually laughed out loud when I read that.

    Maybe they're stacked?

I was thinking that too but you would think they would say stacked, plus that would usually add cost. Could they just mean when you have both engaged they are wired to cancel hum?

But I do think these look pretty cool. Do they mention the thickness? I would guess they could be pretty toy-feeling if they are ultra-thin and 6 pounds or so.

They remind me a little bit of the old "Maestro" series guitars that Gibson was selling at Best Buy.

Epiphone has these listed as single-coils.

    Some interesting specs.

One thing I'm not sure about is that shoulder on the cutaway side...

For $99 I might try my hand at routing a middle pickup.

I like the blue one a lot but I'd gladly pay more for a set neck.

You can probably find a 1960 Gibson for a few grand and then repaint it.

Maybe the route underneath is large enough for a humbucker or P90.

For $99, I'd probably buy one of those for a project. I like the Sea-Foam Green one, but I'd repaint if I got one of the other colors. I'd also redesign the PG (I don't care for it).

I'd also rout for a middle pickup, as @brattmatter suggested. I don't have much faith in stock pickups on a $99 guitar, no matter what kind of spin they try to put on them... They're probably going to sound over-wound and harsh.

This is basically a re-tooling of the $99 Epi LP Junior. They just routed for two single-coils instead of a bridge HB, changed the PG, and painted them different colors.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a set neck at this price point.

I'm not too concerned about a set neck. I really love how easy it is to get a bolt on neck to accommodate you. I'm not knocking set necks, of course - just saying.

Completely agree about the pickups. Chances are good that they suck ass.

Me neither... I'm one of those weirdos who consider bolt-on to be the superior method of attaching a neck to a body.

    They sure do.... :hushed:

But it kind of inspires you to want to make a project of it and dress it up some... Well, it does me, anyway. Speaking for myself.

BTW, if the necks on those are anything like the $99 LP Juniors, you'll probably want to (have to) use it to practice fret leveling/dressing... Or just put a better neck on it.

I'm one of those weirdos that thinks there's no difference.

Not to beat a dead horse, but look at the neck pocket on this LP Studio model versus the $99 special.

Why would the special have the extra shoulders? Is that representative of the original Gibson specials? What am I missing?
