Or even a Vietnamese or Indonesian one (I'm going to assume anything out of Japan would be prohibitively expensive).

I'd really like to find a politically correct Rickenbacker 330/360 12 string style replica/copy with a few modifications that would eliminate the most common complaints I've read about the real thing.

However, based on my past history and experience with AE vendors, I'm extremely loathe to go back there again. The AE web site has plenty of copies available ranging from sort of accurate to not even close and varying in price from around $250 to $350 shipped. I would not mind at all paying more to avoid the MIC quality/communication lottery.

Rareguitarheaven.com looked like a possible source until I ran across too many negative reviews and while there were positive ones too, they seemed like too much of a crap shoot to being paying over $600 for one. They sell exclusively through their site and while they take PayPal and Visa/MC, if something goes awry, it's a lot easier to get at least a partial refund if using AE.

I also wouldn't mind paying more to an American middleman who could deliver and stand behind a quality product regardless of where the guitar was made.

FWIW, this is what I'm looking for. To my knowledge, there was never a lefty version and while I'm sure I could get Rickenbacker to make one for me, based on current pricing, I wouldn't be surprised if it was well over $4000:

This is a blast from the past from AGF, but at one time Rickenbacker copies made by Galveston caused quite a stir around here. I discovered this thread a while back in the course of researching a Galveston Strat copy I purchased.

TJ, maybe you can source one of these used Galveston Rickenbacker copies. They're supposed to be really good and authentic looking.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely look into it but would be shocked if they were ever available in a lefty. Wolf guitars makes a nice 6 string copy that's gotten good reviews and sent them a message Friday night through their distributor here as to the availability of a left-handed model but have not heard back from them:

I think it would be difficult to find custom shops who can produce at the price range of Chinese knockoffs. I know of some custom shops here in Korea but after intl shipping and all I'd image it wouldn't be astoundingly different from a custom shop in the US.

There's an old gentleman I know who makes his own line of guitars. I could show him pics and get a quote for you.

Yeah....I'm not thinking my suggestion would be anywhere close to a chinese amount.
But I would think it'd be less than $4k...

I've got the names of a couple decent US luthiers but I can't imagine how it could cost less than a couple grand. Besides drastically lower labor costs, the big advantage these AE guys have is because they already have plans/templates, there's no need to start from scratch or hand make anything...

Thanks, yes I've seen those but there a little too far off the Rickenbacker path for me...

He used to but it doesn't seem to exist anymore. His shop is literally a 5 minute walk from my office. I can stop by on the way back from lunch and get you some first hand pics and maybe a rough quote.

Thanks, much appreciated and at your convenience. It would be interesting to know if he's ever sold any guitars to anyone outside of South Korea..

So are you looking for a 6 or 12 string?

And you'd be most welcome here!

    A 12 string, preferably a left-handed version of the 1993Plus model:

    http://www.rickenbacker.com/model.asp?model=1993Plus

Rare Guitar Heaven has previously built one and would be more than happy to make another for me one but for the reasons mentioned in my original post, I'm not comfortable with them:

I spoke to the man and he says he can do it but he's never done that type of combination tuning mechanism. He's confident he can do it though.

The problem though is the price. It's a full custom job and he estimates roughly $1300. I can probably talk him down some but not to the prices you've mentioned.

Here's one he did a little while back

Thanks for asking, I appreciate it. Starting from scratch, I can understand why it would cost that much...

Apologize if you already mentioned it but have you checked with @Horax to see if he can get it built for the price range your thinking?
