    Merry Christmas all!

    I hope you're having a beautiful day.

My laptop had some kind of hardware failure and will no longer boot up. I need something for work (word, Excel, email, Google versions of such, no gaming) to replace it quickly and for cheap.

Any ideas on best refurb prices?

    Thanks!

So close, but so far away
I recently purchased a refurb HP elitebook from Newegg for about $115. I guess it depends what your needs are. I didn't want a chromebook style format and I had a difficult time finding a new machine for under $300 that didn't have a huge screen as I wanted more portability. $20 more and I increased my ports and added a DVDRW with a base. This was my second refurb from them in about 5 years in the $100 - $125 range with the other being a business class desktop for my wife.

Thanks guys. And thanks pesky, agree Newegg is great and have used them nearly every time.

I'm a chrome user for sure although a little weary of Google.

    Any particular pros/cons about Chromebooks?

Looks like right now Newegg only has $180+

My very first childhood computer was a Mac but everything else has been PC.

Many of them were proper IBM's, so Lenovo is kind of home base for me in the laptop space.

I've had a couple of Dells that mostly worked but have had their problems.

    Great prices.

I don't much have a need for CD drives anymore although I believe ThinkPads come with 'em.

For portability, I went back down to the 14.x inch screen as well. This last Dell was 15 and the one before that was 17.

Chromecast allow access to larger screens as needed.

Dell Refurbished sends me sale emails all the time.
I'm interested to see what you come up with as my current Dell hand me down is ageing fast

The one I just ordered is a Lenovo, which I'm familiar with from my previous corporate career.

They're sleek and focused business machines that take a real world pounding pretty well for many years.

Cool, thank you. Was it worth it to go SSD instead of HDD?

Yes. If you even try to run Windows 10 on a mechanical drive you'll notice that it literally will never stop spinning or dip below 30% usage at all times.

Killing the Windows Search and Indexing services as well as the app store helps with that a bunch. Once I did that within 30 seconds of boot disk usage is in the low single digits percentage.

Yep, I've managed to get it down to maybe 10% at best with a mechanical drive, SSD solves it immediately though.
