This baby popped up on CL recently. I've been wanting a Cabronita Tele for a LONG time and I drooled when I saw this for sale but at $250 I had to talk myself down because I have a lot going on right now and gear is not in the budget. However, last night I decided to scroll through CL (like an idiot) and I see the guy lowered the price to $200. I can't walk away from this thing at $200! I emailed the seller and this morning I got a text from the guy so I met up with him before work. Score! It's barely been played and came in a $110 Fender ABS molded HSC with $75 Hipshot locking tuners.

    Stoked!

From what I've read, the Fideli'trons in the Squier version are the same pickups the Fender version received. True?

Yes, same pickups as the Fender MIMs.

    Congrats and enjoy!

(Play it like you stole it 'cause... you kinda did at that price.)

Nice with all those extras. That's a good price considering they're done manu these.

I put a 500k value pot in mine & honyock hooked me up with the appropriate width saddles. Love mine.

Let me know when you do. I'm the next state over but I'm always interested in Cabs whether made from parts, Squiers, MIM, or MIA. Don't know which part of IL you are in though.

@idiotsdelight I remember reading that some people replace the bridge on these with something configured slightly different. I can look it up but since you mentioned it, what should I be aware of?

The bridge was a saddle/string spacing issue was only with the MIM Cabronitas, not the Asian Squier Cabs or the original MIAs. And judging by the pic provided at the top, you're fine--no worries.

    HNUGD!

But if you're interested... there's tons o' archived talk about it on TDPRi. [spoiler alert!] It was a design flaw not a manufacturing flaw. The saddles were just too wide at the bridge and the High-E string didn't line up with the pickup pole pieces. And worse, you could easily/accidentally bend the bottom string off the fretboard in the 12-20 fret range.

Had Fender ordered the same bridge/saddle spacing from the original MIA Cabronitas, there would have been no issues. But they didn't. I replaced the factory bent steel bridge with the American Standard Hardtail bridge and it was perfect after that.

And good on Fender for getting it right by the time they started making the Asian Squires a year later.

So now the trick is, whenever you see a MIM Fender Cabronita for sale on eBay, Reverb, etc., it's quite common that the seller avoids head-on photos. They prefer to cheat the bodies at an angle so you don't notice that High-E string missing its pole pieces.

Fon instance, here's a MIM for sale on eBay right now. The first pic is using that favourable skewed angle. The bottom string lines up well at this angle, but that makes no sense because, at an angle, it shouldn't...

    5ff8f057c3a6aede233b13e3212ed596.jpg

But this seller did include another pic, one taken from head-on.

    Lo' and behold...

    "Juuuuuust a bit outside!"

The Low-E, A, D and G are fine enough. The B string is starting to stray and the High-E is making a break for it.

Truthfully, the misalignment with the pole pieces had more to do with sheer aesthetics than tone. It looks awkward but it's not enough to significantly retard the magnets. That said...

...if you follow that High-E string up to the neck, you can see how precarious it is with the edge of the 17th and 19th frets.

Now take a gander at my MIM with the American Standard Hardtail bridge and it's perfect! All the string-pole alignment is fantastic and that High-E isn't crowding the fret ends and shouldn't be a problem when you start playing "Shine On You Crazy, Diamond."

So ends the lesson of the fabled MIM Cabronita bridge controversy...
