I was one what that had to have the best sounding pedal, best sounding amp, best sounding pickups, and so on. At least in my price range. I chased guitars and pedals so much, when I should have been just playing. Lately, maybe due to age, I just like to play.

Look at some of the pros out there that have pedal boards full of Boss and MXR pedals. They play for a living and use off the self pedals. Some have boutique pedals and custom guitars, but I see so many that do not.

Not telling anyone chasing tone to stop, because there is fun, thrill, and a rewarding feeling to the finds. But how many still chase and how many are playing more than chasing these days? I don’t play as much as I like, but the chase for me has lessened.

I can't help but want the guitar I don't have. I don't think that urge will ever go away. I wish it were about tone chasing, but it simply isn't. I don't really chase the "best" gear, having adopted the digital simulation path. Between the virtual amps and the Helix I have hundreds of tone options. If I can't find something that works with a decent guitar, I'm not trying hard enough.

One part of the tone chase I do still routinely participate in, gear wise, is in tinkering with a guitar's electronics. If I will own a guitar for any length of time, it must have quality pickups, pots, switches, and jack. I've been known to replace a bridge or two as well, but no single change is as important for my setup than a nice pickup.

I've been a half assed chaser. But no new gear gets me too excited now. I have plenty of great sounding gear. Cheap guitars with nice electronics, I have plenty. Some good amp and speaker cabs. Incomplete pedal board rebuild project all over the floor.
I am playing more, again. Thats the best.

For me part of the fun is trying different gear and buying/trading/selling to make it happen. I've learned a lot that way. I figure as long as I'm enjoying the time spent doing it, it's not really an issue. I could certainly be doing less productive things with my time.

Ever since I got my HH Strat and my Headrush Gigboard (along with my Traynor YCS50 when I need some real tube action) I don’t feel like I need anything else. Still got the tele I made and my AL3200 too of the spirit takes me.

I chased it until I found it, then stopped.

I have not bought any gear in a few moons now. I'm pretty happy with what I got now ,gear wise , and cannot justify the price for the dream gear I want and don't really need. Need is the operative word here......
    Need Vs want

    But I WANT a Mesa Boogie Mark V 25

For me, I like a deal. If everything was $1k I'd be done forever. In fact I was done for 20 + years. It was this last 8 with all the crazy steals that made me buy "in self defense". About halfway in I realized I couldn't buy all the wayward discarded guitars so I started getting pickier. Now pretty much it would have to be a 59 LP for $450 and then I'd still be pissed because I'd have to sell my current lp and I really like it.

Still need a real good acoustic. Just need to find the agile of acoustics. Been hard to spend 1 to 1.5k

Hi! My name is Jim and I'm a pedal whore.

It's fun to me....and I spend way more than I should. Nobody listens to me except the dogs and
cats and me....but it at least gives me something to do. I pretty much have the guitars I want,
but I do fiddle around with them. Same with amps, but if I see a pedal that really intrigues me
(not just because it's expensive...or the next big thing) I'll eventually get it. It's one of the perks
of being old. BTW, every piece of gear I get I put one of my grandbabies names on it....you know,
just I in case I have to leave suddenly. They'll know to whom I want it to go....

For me it's less a chase and more about what I stumble upon

Glad to hear this as well. I do look from time to time, but my days of buying in excess hopefully are over. I am looking at a pedal for sale here though. Go figure.

Yeah, my days of regular purchases of gear are done. I have acquired some gear needed for the acoustic act I am part of but other than that I am in the selling mode. Just about ready to have another fire sale.

Same. I’m down to 13 guitars, and plans of unloading a few more.

Also jettisoning several pedals I never bonded with.

Amps on the other hand......there’s always room for one more!

A @tonebender fire sale! Please tag me if/when that happens as I'd love to buy something off you. My recollection is that you have really great taste and I was dumb to hesitate last time.

I'm with you! Most of what I own was bought used and at a significant discount.
I like the chase but I'm also very selective these days so it's more like stalking.
