    - I buy this stack of 8mm movies at an estate sale, realize some are unique family mementos

    - I contact an heir to the estate, takes them a full week to respond with interest.

    - taking another look, I find there are five long movies weddings, Christmases, etc.

What am I to get for (some) compensation, for essentially saving these from the eventual dumpster?

I'd see what/if they offer anything. I'd at least expect what I paid & maybe a little more for my time. I'd be grateful if someone contacted me over such mementos.

The payoff is in doing the right thing for someone, imo.

Please let them know there are places that will transfer old 8mm movies to DVD.
Google can find them. I had that done to a stack of my wife's family's old 8mm films we inherited.

I would just wait and see if they offer anything. If they don't, then at least you earned some good karma points.

I already done the karma thing: done the research to find them, and initiated contact.

Don't get anything.....except the good feeling of doing something nice for somebody.
    You'll be paid eventually.... (y)

I don't see a problem with getting what you paid back however being nice to people is good to so go with your gut.

I’d expect my money back. They didn’t pay me to take their films home and review them. But I wouldn’t ask for anything more.

Doubt they offer anything, after all they let it be sold. If you're lucky you'll break even financially.

The films were overlooked as some slide carousels were labeled NFS.
Yeah I want to be compensated, the reels are quite big not the pocket size ones. I have a feeling these folks may be jerks, and if so they may get just the minimum.

People are so quick to liquidate stuff when someone dies. I'm gonna leave a treasure map and a very hard to decipher clue.

That being said, i have a few 8mm projectors and some films of me and family from early 60's. What i did was play them on a screen, record the screen with a vhs or 8mm tape, convert that then into dvd, hand out copies to siblings.

I would say to get your monies back at least.

I have a silver pocket watch from whoever owned this house before us with a engraved name, they said he had no living relatives but one day i will search it out and give it to someone.

Are you concerned with your ethics or theirs? If yours , do the right thing see they get them back reward or no. If theirs be as cheap and miserly as you feel like being. You bought a box of slides and film hoping to find something worth buying. Did you?

Buying was about getting something to use my projectors, and sentimentality got the better of me. Some of us are like that in Massachusetts... Bahwawhee

OK you bought them to use , close to what I said and pretty much what I meant and put badly. Your ethics are your own but for me I would go with what I posted earlier. I don't expect much agreement with me and really it doesn't matter. Just do what YOU feel is the right thing.

Practically everyone on this thread agrees with you.

We're not judging @Poodlesrule one way or the other. But if it were me, I'd return the tapes to the family without any expectation of compensation (except maybe the cost to buy them from the estate, which was probably dirt cheap), and let Karma take care of the rest. Sometimes doing what's right is its own reward...

I wouldn't ask for or expect anything. I wouldn't even expect a response. If those weddings ended in divorce... well, who would want those...
