Happy New External Digital Monitor Day to me!

So, I've been shooting video of music and dance performances for the past couple of years with my two Lumix Gh2 cameras. I've gotten some decent results, but I've known for a while that to step up my game, I've needed an external monitor for checking focus and exposure.

BUT, they used to be pretty pricey. Nowadays, the price of a good one has come WAY down….so I just got this baby from Amazon yesterday afternoon:

Just $150!!! Crazy. And the reviews on photo/video forums are pretty consistently positive.

I'm psyched to try it out this weekend.

Congrats! That's a great price and I love me some focus peaking. I have camera that displays FP - it's a real plus when shooting in tough light.

Tough light is the issue. I am almost always shooting in very low-light situations. I can't use auto-focus. Have to do manual focus. And it's VERY difficult to judge focus on the little camera screens. Ask me how I know. :(

I wish I could use auto-focus when shooting, but with moving subjects and video, you just end up with a lot of footage of the camera trying to focus on a moving target.

I've also had issues where the exposure looks good on the camera monitor, but then when I get it to my computer, the exposure is somewhat off.

REALLY hoping the external monitor helps with these issues.

Oh I get that! I shoot a bunch of low light and bright light stills. Predictive autofocus is pretty much a joke on most cameras and when it comes to exposure? I only trust a histogram. What forum is this again?

alright, so i have the monitor attached to my camera now and HOLY SHIT is it an improvement!!! The much larger image size makes focusing a breeze, even if it didn't have focus-peaking built-in. Which it does.

Now just gotta figure out how to get the histogram and zebra stripes and I'm golden.

I'm just kind of a tech geek. While I don't do a lot of video or picture taking that does look pretty cool. I was geeked out over getting my new Galaxy S7 this week.

I just can't believe I've waited this long to get one. Makes a huge difference.

What makes it especially cool is that at such a low price, I can get one for each of my two cameras, for when i do a two-camera shoot.

Nice. So does the GH2 support focus peaking natively? Or does the monitor have its own built in? I shoot mostly still with my Lumix GX7 that replaced my G3 a few months ago. (BTW thanks pesky for turning me on to Lumix) The GX7 has peaking and it makes manual focus MUCH quicker and easier in most circumstances. In fact I have been experimenting with AF+MF mode, and so far it seems pretty handy.

This screen has focus peaking built-in. :grinning:
The Gh2 does not have focus peaking. The Gh4 does.
