My wife walked out into the backyard yesterday because our little yappers were barking.....and didn't
    sound exactly right.

They had found this HUGE nasty-ass snapping turtle. 20 - 25 lbs. and mad as a hornet coz the
dogs were harassing him. If he had got hold of one it wouldn't have turned out well.....for the dog.

    IMG_0600.JPG IMG_0601.JPG IMG_0604.JPG IMG_0606.JPG

The photos don't show exactly how big he is....but check out his toenails....they were almost and inch
long. Funny thing is....the nearest body of water is 1/4 mi away and he'd have to cross a busy road.
Finally got the mofo dogs to leave him alone and he scurried (yes, scurried....they're fast) off into the
    woods.

Edit: It is a common snapping turtle, 20 - 25 years old.

Laying eggs most likely. We have them come up into our front yard every year. They claw their way up an embankment (we live on a small river) about 30 yards from the water. Then dig a rather large hole and put their eggs in it.

Very cool. I have a feeling that turtle is VERY old judging by its looks.

This little fellow always shows up in the fall. He/She becomes a hazard when it wonders onto the runway. Last year he ended up in our hangar bathroom.

On another note, a guy on the local radio here commenting early on regarding the origin of the Chirona Virus: " Tell them to stop eating turtle feet over there, gadammit!!"

Out here, turtles come on the news often.
They get themselves trapped in Massachusetts Bay in the cold months, get stunned and need rescue - old-school van heading to Boston Aquarium for recovery.

Mass. Audubon has a Terrapin turtle conservation program:

I'd go with McGill, (and she called herself Lil),
But everyone knew her as Nancy.

Points to those who get the song reference, lol.

Yeah, I live here down in "Gator Country" (points back to you). I haven't seen any snapping turtles but we did get a gopher tortoise in the neighbor's field behind us last year.

    OK another turtle:
Bali, 1976. Me and another dude, looking for a ride, which was graciously offered by two locals. Small pickup truck.
We hop in the small truck bed... sharing the tight space with a huge, live turtle, just dragged up from a nearby marsh.
    I can still smell it...!
We LOAO for while, over a beer, when at destination.
