So I've got two Agiles with P90's, an AS-820 and a custom PS-900. I've never been super happy with the pickups in the PS-900, and after doing some A/B comparison to the stock pickups in the AS-820, have come to the conclusion that they sound like trash. Thin, weak tone, neck is muddy, bridge is shrill, etc. On the other hand, my AS-820 sounds absolutely wonderful and I have no desire to change the pickups. I was originally thinking about just getting another set of P90's for the PS-900, but then I thought, I've already got a good P90 guitar, and don't have anything with mini's, so...

I don't have any experience with mini humbuckers, so I'm open to any and all suggestions for a decent set that won't break the bank. My only requirement is that they have gold covers, to match the rest of the hardware.

Here's some guitar porn, because why not.

We've got a few people who do reasonably priced custom winds here. such as @mozz, @Buddha Pickups, and @andrewsrea. I've seen @andrewsrea do chrome and black for firebird pickups which are supberb. I have to sets of three in strats which I can highly recommend. Obviously they'll be pricier than GFS, but the custom winders one our forum give about a good of a deal as can be had on custom-wound pickups.

Yes, I can speak for quality of all three. In fact, I've got a set of Rob's Firebird pickups...

I am pretty sure Mini HB's are a differnt route than a standard P90 too, aren't they? That's a pretty killer looking PS to hack up if need be.

I had a dimarzio super distortion soapbar in the bridge of an AD201 once an it was a killer pickup and also splittable. I think it was a standard P90 size too. So while it's not technically a "mini-humbucker", it's a humbucker that fits in a p90 route.

There are some guitars that originally came with minis (like Firebirds) that have the flat metal rings and the routs in those guitars are different. I've installed a few sets of minis in guitars that originally had P90s but you need those adapters that I posted in the link above. GFS isn't the only source, there are a few others on eBay too. Just remember that you need the ones that come with the mounting hardware otherwise you're going to have to invest some time improvising....

I bought a guitar that came with the 59 minis (a Dillion LP that originally had P90s) and they are great but unfortunately, the OP was looking for something in gold and currently GFS has none (although they have in the past)...

How about some Filtertrons, Hilotrons, or Blacktops? The pickups should fit that route & the bezels are good looking.

That guitar is gorgeous as is. Why risk messing with it? Maybe just a better set of soap bars? Two P90 equipped guitars are not too many!

As long as the original wasn't a dog-ear, a typical FB pickup will fit. Using a standard FB ring, or an Epiphone insert type ring.

My advice would be to stay with P-90’s or get another (or several more) guitar for full size humbuckers. I never could fall in love with mini-hums.
