that seems like a really sweet price if you're looking for a low-wattage tube amp (with Celestion speaker) https://www.monoprice.com/product?p...7611&cjevent=ffdd0df7969b11e983eb02450a1c0e0e i'd jump on it if i didn't already have a Vox AC4TV8
It is sweet (to me) with bite. Speaker Out is handy. Anybody with a British-style pedal in front of it? Asking for a friend.
I use mine strictly as a pedal platform. I had a little hiss out of the box so I swapped both tubes for some NOS types. This hiss was gone and it sounds great clean. My only problem is that since I swapped the tubes there’s no natural distortion until the volume is set to ‘go F yourself.’ But as a pedal platform it’s great. I think my most obviously Brit style pedal is a joyo deluxe crunch (knockoff of the MI crunch box). I also have a ts9, ocd and a half dozen other drives. Some of my guitars are particular about the pedals, but all the pedals play nice with the amp. The delux crunch, for example, is to my ears a lot less convincing as a MIAB through single coils than buckers. I just picked up the Dod Carcosa fuzz and I literally can’t stop playing it. Every guitar through that pedal into the MP5 sounds bitchin. Saturday night I ran my wife’s bass through it, into the MP5. The splattery, fully cranked ‘after’ knob sounds were not great. But at more traditional fuzz settings it sounded good. I wanted to use an eq to shape more but broke my eq pedal. I run it through a handmade 1x12 through the line out. I don’t know what they list for mnow, but mine was on sale maybe a year and a half ago for $99 and they let me stack a 15% off coupon on top. A half dozen of the pedals I play through that amp cost more than that amp. It’s an outstanding value in my opinion
A bargin at that price. I stole mine last year on sale and free shipping for $79. with tax now and shipping not quite the steal but damn good for the money. @Poodlesrule not sure it qualifies as a brit style pedal but I have a clean boost that can get into crunch territory I use it some with this amp. However I'm just as likely to play an AL cranked with it on full 5 watts. Gets all the dirt I want then.
I put a 12AU7 in mine for a little bit of lower volume gain. Yeah, those things were a bit loud if you needed to find some grit. I bought mine for $79-$89? free shipping. They used to always have that sale, but haven't seen it much lately.
I was thinking of swapping in a 5751 or 12AU/AT/AY for the preamp to drop the volume. But honestly, I feel like it's exactly what I want it to be, which is a great pedal platform, so why mess with it. In 5W mode (I think the 1W mode sounds noticeably thinner), with the volume near noon, that amp is perfect for how I use it (I should also say that I ALWAYS have a reverb pedal on running in the front at the end of whatever chain of pedals I have plugged in). If I want an amp with good amp gain (I do), then I should get one (I will; between the Origin 20 and the DSL 20, Marshall is probably getting some of my money this year). But the MP5 plays her role beautifully...
I had one. Not bad but really kind of Vanilla. OH yeah that was the tolex color and the sound but no complaints.
I love the 15 watt one. $125 shipped to my door.new. really nice anp. And for that price, unbelievable.
I like the15 watter too, the 1w switch is still way loud if you have the gain up, but I find that if I put the gain at zero and turn up the volume it works really well in my office for pedals. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Everyone needs to remember a 5 watt is still half as loud as a 100 watt (Ball park assuming similar speakers) I believe you can get a bigger vol change with the speaker changes. And to be twice as loud as a 50 takes 500 watts. A 50 watt amp with a more efficient speaker can sometimes totally swamp a 100 w amp. Also it seems many times a 30 watt tube amp can unwrap swallow and then throw away the wrapper when its against a 100 W solid state amp.
Yea a 5751 would be a good one to try. Also a 12DW7 Might be interesting. 12BZ7 is crazy to try also. Very noisy but insane gain.
