It’s a heavy record. Their trademark humor is absent. I think Maynard tried to lighten it up on 7empest a bit, but for fucks sake every song on this record is really damn serious. Maybe he felt like he had to because the rest of the guys (Adam) wouldn’t just say the thing is done. According to Maynard they had a “fantastic” record 8 years ago but it got canned by the band.

I do enjoy listening to the band on their jams. Maynard definitely let them do their thing.

I think it hit a lot of marks but light and fun isn’t one of em anywhere on here. I still love the album but it definitely requires you being present.

You should go see them in concert.
    IF you are in Austin;
    10/25 in San Antonio
    or
    10/27 in Houston

I've only been to Texas a few times but if I remember correctly, San Antonio is not Too far away from Austin..

@peskypesky def go to both TX shows. The setlists will probably be virtually the same but it’s like going to a Broadway show.

They just announced this funny VIP package, money grab continues lol...note that the band photo isn’t even guaranteed to include the whole band nor is any meet & greet guaranteed either :

I’m still going to go to the show, assuming getting tickets doesn’t prove impossible.

I’ve listened to the album a couple times now. It makes for good background music while I’m working. I like it overall but the songs are too long and blend together so much that it’s like Tool elevator music to me.

I just had this package type thingy with ZZ Top (I didn't pay for it, but fuck all it was expensive). It was pretty cheesy. If I get the band image with my friends I'll post it. Got a lot of good live shots though.

Found this though. I was standing between MJK & D'amour at this show.

Listened to some of the new album. Feels like i'm listening to bits of the last 3 albums.

    Listening again today.

Still sounds like a really good Tool tribute band got tired of waiting for a new album from the boys and went ahead and wrote it themselves. It's not exactly disappointing, but not what I wanted from them.

Shades of Fleetwood Mac's "TUSK". Another drum/drone music album. Seems like they couldn't think of anything and then
the drummer said "wait, I've got an idea". WTF are any of the songs about? They fell into the trap......

As someone who never actively listened to Tool albums (but will listen to the stuff they play on radio) I like it, but it does seem a little weak on comparison to what I've listened to from them. Now that Tool has released their catalog to streaming I think I need to give their more highly regarded stuff a deeper dive.

I downloaded it Friday and gave it a listen while digging out a concrete blob and making a new post hole for my fence. It was good background music to listen to, but there were a few I thought I already recognized while I sweated my ass off digging a 4ft deep 10 inch hole.

I will say it worked pretty good as an insomnia cure, through my headphones last night. The somewhat consistent nature was almost like a wave machine or something...

I'll give it the road trip test tomorrow as I drive up to Phoenix to meet my wife before we hit the Lions/Cards game Sunday.

it's definitely heavy on the trance stuff...which personally I love.

I also listened to it as background music while doing miserable outdoor tasks(painting facia) and thought it was meh.

During my football draft I listed to it through my monitors and at decent volume. It was much better loud and in my face.

Now a week out from release, I continue to enjoy the album. It isn't the aggression of Opiate/Undertow, the humor/sarcasm of Aenima, or the vulnerability/sincerity of 10,000 Days, but it certainly has the trippiness of Lateralus. I like that their albums vary in sound and theme. Maynard has been quite open that the record is about growth through age/experience, so perhaps it's that growth and understanding that gives it a bit more mellow (compared to other TOOL albums) vibe. It still rocks, just much more of a droning, hypnotic feel.

Plus, just bought a ticket to see them here in November (TOOL concert #5 for me)

Good luck, Brooklyn was impossible for me today. Every time I tried to pick seats that were marked available, I clicked continue and it said "these seats have been taken by another customer", rinse and repeat for about 30 minutes. Going to try my luck with Stubhub closer to the day...the only seats now from TicketMaster are nosebleeds almost behind the stage (for like $130). Not going to bother with that.
