So I picked up this custom built guitar by "Thin The Herd" from GC used for a whopping $150. Says it is out of Texas. Someone in my other thread said they're customs built overseas and have the finishing touches (fretwork, setup, etc) done in Texas before being put up for sale.

Wasn't expecting much at this price, but this thing arrived today and I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY.

Ebony fretboard with a bone nut, flame maple neck, nice quality Klunson-style tuners, and a solid ash body.

I'm not sure how to tell but I think this might even be a one-piece body...

Not sure what the pickups are or if they're stock (the screws are a tad tight for my mini screwdriver and I don't have my hardcore one here), but they sound fantastic. There's an awful quality clip below recorded with my Iphone, but this thing screams.

The only "negative" (I guess to some, doesn't bother me) is that it is super heavy...like good old Les Paul weight.

Overall, if I had to judge a price tag on this guitar based on playing it I can't rate it lower than some $1,000 guitars I own. The fretwork is excellent, the tuning stability is fantastic, finish is gorgeous, and the neck feels great.

I am beyond thrilled, I actually can probably say this is the best quality guitar I have ever scored at GC used, much less for freaking $150.

Here are a few pics with my cell:

Oh weird, try this link instead: https://clyp.it/ey15agfh

    And thanks!

Yeah my phone camera is crap but it is unbelievably well built. I'm still playing it, can't put it down. Real mother of pearl dots too, no pearloid. Looks great against the ebony fretboard.

Glad it worked out well. Nice looking guitar. And get to opening those beer bottles with that head stock. :grimacing:

    On it! :grinning:

The headstock has actually grown on me and now I dig it. But I like weird quirky guitars in general. More than anything I'm just really stunned by the quality of this. I expected this to be a mid-level axe that was going to have a decent core and needed everything modded out, and it doesn't need a thing. Even came perfectly setup.

Damn sure is pretty. That color is better than the Gibson heritage cherry. The clip smokes for sure.....and it is a interesting headstock design. If you ever get tired of the headstock shape you could always make disk of some type material and glue it in. HNUGD!

Yeah... I'm just on my cell phone and that thing looks boutique-ish alright. One-piece body? Flame maple? Ebony? $150? Yow!

I would fix that bottle opener headstock somehow if it were mine, though. I can never understand it when someone's solution to avoid TM infringement is to take a weird bite out of the Fender shape and call it good.

    But otherwise, top-shelf score!

Yeah it's either that or just an attempt at being unique. I initially did have plans to mod it but the more I spend time with it the more it's growing on me...I guess we'll see. My tech can probably reshape it to be whatever I want for something like $50, so no worries either way.

I'm not 100% on it being a one piece body but I looked it over carefully and I can't see a seam anywhere that might indicate multiple pieces...

I actually like the headstock. I understand why others wouldn't, but I think it's kinda cool. Not a fan of that pickguard, though. Maybe if it was black, white, or nonexistent :p

Either way, a great playing guitar for $150? Nice score!

Thanks! It's definitely not routed underneath the pickguard, I've been playing with the idea of just taking it off. Going to try it when I dive deep into this guitar this weekend. I still haven't even pulled the pickups. I imagine they're stock but if they are these are the best import pickups I have ever heard. There's another one of these (different finish and maple fretboard) for sale on Ebay for like $400-450 and it's very tempting but I've been buying way too many guitars lately...

That body shape keeps growing on me. I had to go and look at the website as well. The natural colored one says it is a prototype and will have more coming. They had more at one time, so I assume there will be more again.

I bet it sounds like a tele would with humbuckers. It just looks comfortable to play sitting with those contours.

It's a screamer man, these pickups are GAINY. Check out the clip I posted, I'll post a few more this weekend going over some clean tones, etc.

It is very comfy sitting down, the carves are in just the right spot and it doesn't shift at all. This thing is HEAVY though so after about an hour I had to get up and stretch to regain some circulation :)

Super deal and beautiful guitar. I would leave the headstock just as it is. It is unique. But that's just me.

Like this one a lot.It has a really solid look and I can deal with the headstock as "unique" as it is.
