So I enjoy 7 strings...but I probably play 6 string 85% of the time and 7 string the other 15%. I've had one or two pricier ones over the years and always sold them because I feel like having a pricey guitar you play 2-3 times a month is silly. Since then I've been on the lookout for a well built less expensive alternative, preferably with some nice upgrades I don't have to pay for :).

Enter this beautiful Sterling Petrucci Jp70 model, in my favorite finish of all time - Mystic Dream (it basically is a color shift finish from purple to blue to green. Pics can't really do it justice, just a beautiful finish! This one was also upgraded with a set of Bareknuckle Juggernaut pickups with burnt chrome screws to match the finish. I ended up paying a couple bucks more than just the pickups would've cost me new for the entire thing including gig bag.

Never played a Sterling of any sort before but I'm really impressed by this build quality. It plays great with super low action, rosewood fretboard has some beautiful grain, the finish is 100% as well done as it was on the "real" Musicman JP7 I had before, and these pickups sound absolutely monstrous. Previous owner removed the finish on the back of the neck (feels nice and smooth), besides that you wouldn't know the guitar isn't brand new.

Needless to say, my hunt for a 7 is over for not much scratch.

That's gorgeous. Congrats man! I've never had the pleasure of an EB or a Sterling in my hands but always wanted to check them out. Enjoy!

Thanks! Really happy with it so far, and it feels good to buy a guitar and not want or need any upgrades. Pretty rare for me, I enjoy modding...

Totally didn't see your comment until just now haha, thanks man! EB makes stellar stuff, this was my first experience with a Sterling model but I'm very impressed.

He certainly is (or was anyway, I’m a huge fan of his work circa like 1991 - 2001 or so), and apparently designs some comfy guitars too. Really liked every Petrucci model I ever had!

Those are nice @slowhand84 , congrats!

A JP70 was actually on my list to test the 7-string waters. I really wanted a Mystic (I had a JP6 before in that finish) but ended up getting a purple burst, but the guy totally flaked on my and simply never shipped the guitar, I have no idea if Reverb did a damm thing to him. But I looked and looked for a good deal on a JP70 in Mystic and never found one, wasn't meant to be. Sounds like you got a smokin' deal!

Thanks Razzle! Seems like I pretty much paid for the pickups and got the guitar for free, so pretty thrilled with that. Bummer about your Reverb deal, Reverb tends to do right by people for the most part in my experience so if that happened I'm sure he at the very least got a warning that if he does it again his account will be closed.

There's the same exact purple JP70 you got robbed of at GC right now for a pretty solid price including gig bag in case you want to give it another go!

Nice JP70! I think the Sterling models are pretty underrated. Fairly good build quality and hardware but they really need a pickup swap. What do you think of the Juggernauts in it?

Yep, I never got to play it with the stock pickups installed (this is actually my first experience with a Sterling model of any sort though I had a couple of Musicman JPs in the past) but the bridge and locking tuners are certainly quality so I imagine a pickup swap is all these need to really be top notch.

I'm really loving the Juggernauts in this thing, I'll try to get a few clips up but they sound absolutely huge. Bareknuckle is my favorite pickup company and I have them in many of my guitars, but this is my first exposure to their 7 string sets. Really impressed by the clean tones too, definitely not a one trick pony the way high gain pups sometimes are.

Love the Sterling line. My main bass is a Sterling 4 string, and I really want a guitar from the same line. Very sweet, and congratz!

Nice! I've seen a few of their basses in person and they look quite nice. Can't go wrong with a Petrucci model if you're after a guitar from them, I'm sure the 6s are just as well built as the 7s!

If you want a killer bass in a bang for the buck sense, they rock. I still Jones a good Pbass, because Pbass and GAS... but as a rock solid choice for most players it is unbeatable. Especially good with a pick or my favored slap style.
