I have a hunch they're good modding platforms.

I've dealt with the Fishbone seller twice and bought a total of three guitars. Two of them were supposedly Tokais (DC Junior and Special copies) which I highly doubt were authentic and the third was a Fishbone brand ( Firebird copy) which are supposedly made in the same factory as Tokais. All three needed significant price adjustments based on poor QC. While the owner was quick to do this, the quality of all three reminded me of the typical Ali Express stuff. Not a problem if you know what you're getting into, are expecting to put time and money into them and have factored that into the price you paid. It's not OK when you're paying substantially more to begin with than you would for the same type of guitar from an AE seller...

All as I'd figured, and, good to have that confirmed

Those are some wonky tuners. Seller/manufacturer's should at least try to have a good example of their product in their pictures. Maybe truth in advertising is a thing.

Looks pretty cool, but I am picky about Tele necks. They have to be a beefy U or V shape. I would not want to buy one and find it has a thinner wider neck.

my suggestion would be to buy it, and if you don't like the neck, get a beefy one from Warmoth and sell the one that came with the guitar.

I see all guitars under $350 as modding platforms and fully expect to upgrade tuners, pickups, electronics, etc and maybe swap out the neck.

I would not recommend these to someone who is looking for a "finished" guitar. The only sub-$200 guitar I've bought that really didn't need upgrades was my SX Liquid.

One of those rare occasions where the case is more cool than the guitar.

I had always wondered how those guitars were. I had a sneaking suspicion that they were just as you described.

I think northern ash has a grain similar to that (alder-ish). A far cry from the beautiful swamp ash we're used to. If that is northern ash, it'll probably be heavier as well.

At least the headstock looks fairly fenderish. That body is not any kind of ash I have ever seen before.

I bet Fishbones are great guitars to practice your SCALES on. Be careful, though. You might get HOOKED on them.

FWIW, before purchasing the Fishbone Firebird, I asked the seller to confirm the headstock logo was not upside down (righty logo on a lefty guitar) as it was in the listing pic. He said he would actually unbox the guitar and look. He messaged me back saying that it was definitely properly oriented. When I got the guitar, not only was it upside down, the 7th fret inlay was missing completely (it was not in the shipping carton and the way it was packed, there was no way it could have come out during shipping). There's no way he could have missed that if he actually did look at the guitar like he claimed he did. So keep that in mind when reading any of the descriptions...

The alligator case does look cool. Any comments on case quality?
