    ...and not the guitar/movie.

So I was one of those people who didn't ever ever experience the pleasures of Poision Ivy/Oak/Sumac, until this week that is. Apparently most people develop the allergy/reaction at some point but sometimes later in life. Well, it's later in life and it developed. Not asking for mojo as it's more of an annoyance than anytihg, but holy cow is it annoying. Mostly on my lower legs but a spot popped up on my arm to..thinking it is from a big pile of brush and crap I hauled around 2 weekends ago at the father in laws. Didn't realize it could take so long to manifest either.

I"m trying the usual stuff - calamine, cold compress, etc..NOT SCRATCHING...which is proving to be extremely time consuming. I even went to the Walk in clinic and they gave me a 6 day low dose steroid. Did not try it as I am not a big fan of meds, but I broke down and started the regimen this AM to hopefully get some relief.

Any sage advice or clever home remedies out there to share?

Use oatmeal in bathwater to help the itch.

benadryl can help, some people prefer not to take it. I take it when stung. Have never had ivy/oak was immune as a kid. I never test my luck as an adult though. Wishing you relief and soon.

    Careful, careful:
If you break the skin frm scratching, you can easily develop an infection, BTDT, swollen ankles, miserable time.

technu works well for me, but that is if you think of applying it right after exposure.

    what about your clothing?
I had a pair of shoes that kept re-exposing me until I wised up.

The UK does not have poison oak, poison ivy, or poison anything else.
We had been living in England for two plus years when my wife broke out with it.

You can also get infected by petting a dog or cat (they don't get it but can be a carrier on their fur.)

I've never had it but am worried because of a compromised immune system currently. It seems I've started to develop allergies the past 3-4yrs as well.

ANyhoo, at the bike shop we carry this soap that was AMAZEBALLS. A local guy made it, but there are different brands everywhere. We used it on the kids when they would get it. Instant relief after a bath & it would dry up the rashes immediately.

If it flared up weeks later I'd look into thoroughly washing EVERYTHING your skin comes into contact with. Sheets, blankets, clothing, towels, pets, etc. The oils hang around forever.

Mickey, I heard from a few off my old cigar buds that our old pal, Buddy Blackmon had a real serious scare with cellulitis in one leg. Apparently it was a very serious deal. Last I heard, he had recovered and was doing good. I miss chatting with him, he's one heck of nice guy.

Funny you should mention that. I'm a pretty good and creative cook. I shared a lot of my recipes with Buddy over the years and man, that dude loved to eat. Hey i do too, but I am mindful of what I eat and how much of it i eat. I could stand to lose a solid 20 to 25 my own self. Have a good weekend

When I was a 14 year old growing up in the Mississippi Delta, some kids from the next town over rolled up and smoked poison ivy.

They didn't even make it to the emergency room.

Yep, it happened, man. We were screwing around smoking corn silk while working irrigating cotton, during that summer.
We new enough to know not to stand near the smoke while burning trash in those 55 gallon drums after yard work.

Works for some people but not others. Same for antihistamine cremes. There is a product here called Systrel available in pharmacies that everyone swears by for mosquito bites.. I tried it and doesn't do a thing. My system just welts up for two weeks and there's nothing that can help.
