I've never had the opportunity to try a Fulltone OCD and I'm really thinking of splurging for one. It's one of the most popular ODs around and has been for years. Obviously that's for a reason. Mike makes amazing stuff.

Is it really all that? Speak up if you've got any experience with the OCD.

Note: I would not settle for a clone so please don't bother. Otherwise, I'd still never know if the real thing is great.

So I picked up an OCD on a trade a few months ago, and thought it sounded really good between my LP Special w/P90s and Traynor YBA (think Plexi/Tweed Bassman). I've never liked TS style pedals- too nasal and dull for my tastes, but the OCD cut nicely in that setup.

I know you said no clones, but I think you might find this comparison (or the OCD portion anyway) interesting- years earlier I'd bought a Joyo Ultimate Drive but it didn't work with what I was doing at the time so I threw it in a drawer. On Friday, I pulled out the OCD and UD to see what's what.

I used an SG Standard with 490/498 pickups and an LP Studio w/ a Duncan JB/Jazz set. Amp was my cantankerous VT22 that is VERY picky about dirt boxes. On their own, the SG has less bottom than the LP (duh).

With the SG, the UD sounded kinda thin and lacking depth. With the OCD, it came alive and sounded great- nice and full and retaining high end articulation. The character of the distortion was very, very similar, but the OCD just had a fullness that the UD lacked.

However, when I switched to the LP things changed. The OCD just sounded bloated on the bottom in a way I couldn't compensate for by boosting the pedal's tone control (I didn't use amp EQ at all to keep the playing field level). The UD on the other hand sounded much better- the added depth of the LP filled out the UD's bottom end.

I'll probably keep both, but neither has unseated my Pinnacle for Rawk sounds.

I've never actually plugged in to an OCD pedal, however, I have demo'd it on Amplitube and I found it to be sweeter to my ears than the other overdrive pedals on there.

Thanks for the informative reply! A few years ago I ordered a Joyo Ultimate Drive from Amazon after reading many positive comments and reviews. I don't know if the one I received was faulty but it sounded absolutely terrible. I tried to be patient and mess with the settings but it was just unusable and I returned it for a refund pretty quickly. It would take a lot to get me to buy another one.

There are so many versions. You can't just ask if OCDs are good. You need to state what version that you are speaking of. :)

I can understand knocking out cheap clones such as Joyo but don't count out a good quality handmade clone such as the ones that are made by builders in here. Also know that unless you wanted to spend hundreds of $$, it's the only way you'll try some of the discontinued versions of the pedal. Versions 1.2 and 1.3 are the more sought after versions typically.

Good points, Ryan. I've actually looked at that site a few times for reference. The guy really seems to know his stuff. FYI, I'm looking at the latest OCD, V2. From what I've read, some of the earlier versions don't seem to play well with other pedals.

I have an Old OCD and the Ultimate Drive. The UD does not sound exactly like the OCD. Lent my UD to my brother, but I think I kinda like it tad more. Has more bottom end on my rig. I prefer a few of my other overdrives over the OCD. Pure Drive by NOC3 Effects, the Joyo US Dream, Wampler Euphoria and the Open Road by Visual Sound. Think I am running the OCD at 18 volts as well. I have a few other overdrives, but these are my mainstays along with the OCD. You are welcome to borrow it, but shipping may be an issue. It might end up being your thing. It has a few fans.

That's very kind of you Sam, thanks! What version is yours?

I have $40 to use with GC so I may just buy a used one from them. Also, the FT website has blem V2s starting at just a little over $100.

    Bought once. Returned it.

Borrowed a second for a project, didn't use it and gave it back.

Keep in mind that I buy and swap pedals all of the time - but rarely use anything except a Boss OD-3 and a slapblack.

Yes, I've had one before. I tend to circle round to the good stuff
I've had....especially after my playing or sound changes. (y)

It's the most important pedal on my board.
I have a newish one, so it's not some rare early model or anything. It is so versatile that I have often contemplated getting a second so I could have greater tonal variety when gigging.
I have other drives and distortions, including a nice Strymon. The OCD remains my go-to dirt.
It also pairs very nicely with a Blues Driver (or clone thereof), with the BD gain off and tone cranked. Yields a bright sparkly Gibson into Marshall sound from my Fender or Katana rigs with that combo.

I know you said no clones, but I got the $20 Mosky knockoff. Maybe I got a really good one, but I think it sounds great. I have a buddy with an OCD and I don't think there's a ton of difference between the two. I love the OCD sound. Nice and mild all the way through rawk.

I never bonded with my OCD. I also had the Joyo Ultimate Drive and quite frankly I thought the UD sounded like pure dog shit. I haven’t bought a Joyo pedal since.

I think it may have been my rig though. The OCD sounded better goosing my Mesa, but not my Splawn.

I use my drive/gain pedals as a boost/complement into an already fairly heavily distorted amp so my opinion probably doesn’t mean anything to anyone who is looking to get an overdriven sound from a pedal into a cleaner amp.

@RiverDog - what’s your rig like and what are you looking to do?
