I'm thinking about making my own travel solid state amp, but have no good ideas for the speaker (or two). Intended as a travel amp specifically, I want to keep the size down to about a 4 inch speaker or maybe 2 of those. I really do want to make it high quality though. Anyone know of good tiny speakers that sound great for guitar amps, or where to best source them in the US? Thanks!

I would look at partsexpress.com. I typed that into the computer at work once and was blocked, a warning popped up about company policy and subject to monitoring at all times.

I assume that as a travel amp weight as well as size is an issue which causes me to suggest Neodymium magnet speakers.
Neodymium magnets are by far the strongest magnets there are, which means they do not have to be as large (or heavy)
as other types to perform as well (or better) for speakers making amps lighter! :)

    Not a speaker. That's a ruler.

(Awful to many, but had great ideas, beyond the military adventures - erudite, avid reader, unlike some other people we know)

Speaker/system: you may be able to copy the many designs and form factors currently available as Bluetooth things?

I picked up a Fender Rumble bass amp and nearly threw it through the ceiling because it was sooooo much lighter than I anticipated.

Will definitely check out partsexpress, thanks! I'm concerned about keeping it small, but don't mind if it's heavy. I've tried a headphone amp and Bluetooth speaker combo, and just don't like the tone well enough.

Even some of the inexpensive drivers can be good (in my experience). I put a 6 1/2" Pyle mid woofer ($15) as a replacement in my little Vox DA5 multi effects amp and that baby really kicks, plus I can even practice bass with the same amp. But really, the reviews and q&a sections on the PE site have been really helpful for my basic audio tinkering. :sunglasses:

Celestion super 8 gets a lot of comments and is in quite a few small amps

Looked at parts-express and they had a deal I couldn't refuse on a 6-1/2" Eminence, close enough! Will share when I've worked on the build. Thanks again, that was a great referral!

There's a thread here regarding that very speaker. I bought 2 of them on sale...$9?

    And I bought this.

Just got a pine finger joined DIY brood box for an amp build with it.

Here's another. Keep your eye out for these. Super small & toy like. They're hysterically good, IMO. I bought 1 for $10 after my friend brought one over to jam. I put the Eminence in this, but it sounded fine stock. I think I'm going to take the amp out of this for the bee brood cabinet or the old radio I have. @Lamf77 bought one too, at my recommendation.

I can understand wanting to build something yourself, but why not just get something like a Balckstar Fly.

Same speaker I think, but now 11.75 in quantity of 4, which I did (I might make several). I did see that kit and it looked great, especially for the price, but I already have most of the electronics. I might have to make one that way too, but will have to see how much time I can put aside for them.

I've found that the shape of the enclosure itself, as well as the rear baffling, can drastically effect the sound of a speaker. A small speaker can be made to sound much larger, fuller, and rounder when the right combination is utilized. If I was building a small amp that I wanted to sound as good as possible I'd consider the enclosure as much as the speaker.

I guess it boils down to individual tastes. Everything I've tried is just not quite what I want it to be. However, I've also spent massive time doing R&D prototyping on many types of products, so working out the details myself is fine if I can end up making the amp what I expect it to be.

Agree 100%. A lot of smaller speakers have fooled my ears before, and I think the secret sauce is a combination of the enclosure as you say, and just a very good speaker.
