My stepson decided to blow some Xmas cash on a guitar, so naturally I steered him towards Rondo - purveyors of fine Fender knockoffs.

Yeah, I know ... I could always make him one. Well, honestly, the parts to do that are more expensive than to just buy an SX. I told him that if he sticks with it and practices a bunch, I'll build him whatever the hell he wants. The wife even consented to kick in with lessons if he wants them.

Damn, I wish I had grown up in this type of household.

Anyhoo, here's the requisite NGD pictorial. The damn thing came with a huge chip in the body, but lordy is it a player. I'm finding it difficult to resist the temptation to grab one.

She's a beaut from the front...

The back is kinda nice too...

    But... to quote E.T.: "ouch."

He has decided to keep it, so I emailed Rondo to ask for a partial refund.

That’s a beauty! Even with the huge bite mark!

HNGD and hopefully your stepson sticks with it!

Despite the flimsy packaging, that's about as bad as I've seen one come from Rondo. I'm thinking that should be good for $30-$40 off...

You'd think it would save him money in the long run to take the five minutes to give 'em a once over.

This thing growls, tho. Don't tell the kid (he wants twang), but it's a growler.

I'd ask Kurt what his Cash for Gash program might allow. Sort of a backwards B-Stock deal - that's not such a bad thing.

Congrats to the son! I have one too, so I can appreciate your temptation! I put a switchpot on mine so I could turn the bridge pup on at will, so I can have all 7 pup combinations.

Even with the mole on the back, that's a player!

We heard back from Mr. Z this morning. He has offered a return or a $45 refund. His reputation for a good return/exchange policy continues. Thanks again, Kurt - if you're still reading here.

The kiddo chose refund. Even with the ding, that is a fine git-fiddle for a difference of $122.49.

I'll sit down with him and show him some basic maintenance this weekend.

hell yeah. coming pre-dinged is kind of a benefit since you don't feel as bad when it gets the 2nd one as you would if you gave it the 1st one.

Nice eve with the bad relic job. And good on Kurt for that much of a refund on the missing chunk of finish. $45 buys a lot of strings and picks.

That's a bigger refund than Kurt ever offered me. But that's a pretty heinous gouge, too... The finish looks like it's about 1/4" thick in that photo!

My experience with SX Furrians tells me that the nut on that guitar might need to be removed and destroyed... The nut on both of the Furrians I've had were unsalvageable.

I've thought about picking up one of those Nashville Furrians on many occasions. I'm just holding out for some more interesting finishes... I have enough 3TS in my life. :)

I like the stock pickups in my ash furrian but you're right, no twang. That is beautiful grain. Right up there with most ash. I also agree even though the chip is heinous if it plays as good as it looks you dont let it go.

Later you can get him going on pup upgrades

    Nice guitar!

FWIW, I am happy with the GFS PUPs I installed in my recently acquired Ash Furrian.
