So I was noodling around on my Maya Strat clone today (no I have not yet setup my pedal board...maybe Sunday...nackered from the move..need a break) and really started to notice a deeper tone than usual.

I quickly realized that when the lower horn was touching firmly the arm of my Office Chair the tone was louder, deeper and richer. When I moved the guitar away so the lower horn was not touching anything...same tinny unplgged sound.

I wonder if it's just the additional mass or maybe because we have tile floors and the vibration is being carried all the way thru the chair body to the tile...hmmm.

Extra mass, possibly, and possibly that the headstock isn't vibrating so much, which would allow that energy to stay in the strings.

Billy Sheehan did part of the first Mr. Big record with a pair of Vice Grips clamped to the headstock of his bass to get more sustain. I think it ends up being the same principle.

Try it with the headstock touching the wall. Same thing happens.

I've heard that if you play your guitar with the headstock butted up against a canister of depleted uranium it'll get you 90% of the way to the Stevie Ray Vaughn's tone, but that's only if you're using a vintage TS-808. If you play with the body butted up against said canister of radioactive heavy metal you'll get 87.2% the way to the rhythm guitar tone on Judas Priest's British Steel album.

I wonder if an American Strat played in FukoShima prefecture would sound like a Japanese Strat ?

A shower stall with thin sidewalls makes a great volume boost, too. Press the head into a thin metal or glass wall/door. And if the toilet is close enough, Bobs your uncle.
