    Firefly? Monoprice Indio?

I've become acquainted with a young, local woman who's a single mom of two boys and she wants to give her 14 y/o an electric guitar but doesn't have much money. I'm donating a small Squier amp, a strap, cable and picks to the cause and I told her I'd help her find a guitar. The thing is, her budget is only about $100 for the guitar. She says she might be able to swing a little more but I know she can't afford it so I'm seeing what's out there.

I see an open-box Indio tele copy on Monoprice for $89. Looks like it would be $110 with shipping. Anyone know if their teles are decent?

Honestly I'd go for an SX strat or tele over any of that Monoprice stuff. Most of the SXs I've played have been pretty much ready to go out of the box (especially for a beginner). You can find them under $100 at GC sometimes, with an easy return policy in case of any issues.

You can find a ton of decent guitars for $100 or less shipped at GC used in general:

IVY/IYV/whatever on Amazon. The prices sometimes float on those.

    What style does she prefer?

I have the monoprice strat, the California classic I think it's called. Solid entry level axe on par with squier bullets/affinities. In no way remarkable, but totally solid. Neck is pretty slim, might be a good fit for a kid

    This.
They have a Tele for $125, or a strat for $108. If you're patient, an open box pops up on Amazon Warehouse deals for even less (under $70 for the strat).
In terms of value, you won't find better.

If you're patient, an Indio DLX strat pops up every so often as an open box for $99. Those have Wilkinson two point tremolos, flame maple veneers, and better hardware all around.

I'll look at those IYVs. I asked what music her son likes and she said:

All kinds of music but he likes oldies too. He listens to r&b rap hip hop oldies like guns n roses Metallica AC DC Leonard Skynyrd and some country too

I'm late to this party but was going to say I don't own any SX's but do have an indio tele that I am very pleased with, however I did a bit of neck work. Level, et al, and the fret sprout was vicious. All very fixable with teachable moments.

Squier Bullet Mustang. I picked one up new for $119 and it was the best inexpensive guitar I have ever purchased. The fretwork was good. No sharp fret ends. Amazingly low action with no string buzz. Everything worked as it should and played great. I used mine a ton until a picked up one of the Fender Duo-Sonic HS which had a bit chunkier neck that I liked better.

On sale at GC for $119 currently. https://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier/Bullet-Mustang-HH-Limited-Edition-Electric-Guitar.gc

So many great cheap used guitars. Check cl, pawns and gc used. I could probably have bought a decently playable used strat, 1 a week for the last few years for about $60. Most new looking.

SX or IYV would work fine both are better than the recent Fireflys I've have 2 IVYs they have free shipping and I bought a SX 3/4 Strat w/amp for $119 she's 9 and I thought she could handle it better than a full size and all it needed was the intonation needed set. With the IYV's the Tele was good to go out of the box the Strat I bought to turn into a project.
